Potts And Family: Colonial Consumer Exhibit Opening And Lecture
Visit this historic talk to open the site’s new exhibit, Potts and Family: Colonial Consumers, set to run through Nov. 6.
At 1pm, Elizabeth Jones-Minsinger, a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware History Department’s American Civilization Program, will present “Uncovering Women’s Work: Household Consumption and Production in the Mid Atlantic, 1750-1815.” This lecture will focus on how women in Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania engaged in economic activity—especially the business of shopping—during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
After the lecture, visitors can take a guided tour of the site and the new exhibit. Drawing from an extant 1751-1754 Potts ledger, the exhibit explores how the Potts family interacted with their world through commerce. Far from being a self-sufficient, isolated planation, the residents of Pottsgrove Manor were extensively connected to the bustling port city of Philadelphia. The purchases of foodstuffs, clothing and fabric, school tuition, and the services of laborers that are detailed in the ledger provide fascinating insight into the consumer culture of early Pennsylvania.
Cost: $2, suggested donation.

In the basement of the Footlighters Playhouse, the Burlington County Model Railroad Club runs the fictional Rancocas Valley Lines (RVL). It is basically an eastern style railroad that does not depict any particular area, however, there are local town names that are recognizable. It was built as a two track mainline, with a separate Mountain Division. There is one main classification facility (Daley Yard) and a secondary yard at Douglas, with a new engine facility and additional yard tracks, leading into a ten track hidden staging yard.

Japanese Summer Festival Comes to Ardmore; Introducing Americans to a traditional “O-bon” Festival
Thundering Japanese taiko drums, colorful kimono-clad dancers, and bright lights of a traditional summer festival in Japan come to Ardmore on Saturday evening, August 13th. It’s called “O-bon” (pronounced Oh-bone) and it’s the festival that Americans who have lived in Japan remember most fondly. “It’s a community festival that nearly every town or village in Japan organizes to welcome back the spirits of our ancestors” according to Dr. Takako Suzuki, President of the 200+ member Japanese Association of Greater Philadelphia.
But it’s not really a solemn occasion-- “It’s a bit like combining America’s Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and a summer church carnival into one festival” said Patrick Dailey, who with his Japanese wife Seiko, owns and operates “Maido!”, a Japanese market and restaurant on Lancaster Avenue in the heart of Ardmore.
While on a smaller scale than most of the O-bon Festivals in Japan or even in California and Hawaii, Ardmore’s O-bon is ambitious, offering inexpensive Japanese carnival-style games for kids and adults, traditional Japanese festival foods, and even helping you write your name in Japanese! But mostly, it’s about family and the joy of reuniting with relatives and friends.
“Many of our members are 8,000 miles from home and can’t go back to Japan every year, so having this festival is a way to stay connected to the traditions that people remember most fondly” says Dr. Suzuki. “This festival promises lively music, colorful summer kimonos by festival-goers, and an infectious dance-step that will give you the experience of being in Japan—without the $1,200 airfare!” added Dailey.
The fun starts at 6:30 pm at Schauffle Plaza Parking Lot (at Tired Hands Fermentaria) 12 E. Lancaster Avenue, Ardmore.
Admission is free and open to the public.

Penns Woods Winery sixth annual Car Show and
Wine Festival on Saturday, August 20, 2016 from 12pm-4pm.
Each summer Penns Woods hosts an incredible exhibition on their 30 acre property, showcasing over 40 classic cars and drawing in over 500 people. This yearly festival includes live music, wine, and gourmet food and artisan vendors.
Penns Woods Winery has been working alongside the Penn-Jersey Ferrari Club of America since this event was launched in 2010. Over the past six years it has attracted more than just Ferrari car owners and, with the event’s popularity, has allowed Penns Woods Winery to open the showcase to all high-end classic sports cars.

A portion of the proceeds from this festival will be donated to the non-profit, Carz ‘N Toyz. Guests are encouraged to bring a new and unwrapped child’s toy to donate to the organization. In turn, Penns Woods Winery will provide them with a free wine sample ticket. One toy is good for one ticket – NO LIMIT! Carz ‘N Toyz is a non-profit corporation established for the purpose to bring happiness to less fortunate children. Carz ‘N Toyz accepts monetary donations as well as toys that are distributed to hospitalized children of all ages, throughout hospitals located in South Jersey.
To purchase tickets visit PennsWoodsWinery.com. Tickets are $16 per person in advance and $18 at the door. Each ticket includes entrance to the event, a glass of wine, a ticket to vote for “Best in Show,” and a day of fun at the vineyard.
